Lugard, the young African elephant, has faced numerous challenges at a tender age but has become an inspiration with his unwavering spirit. Despite enduring a traumatic past that left physical marks and a limp, Lugard continues to exhibit strength and resilience.
Currently residing at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Nairobi Nursery in Kenya, Lugard is surrounded by a nurturing environment. He shares the space with 17 other young elephants and receives dedicated care and love from his caregivers.
Lugard’s journey to the nursery was not an easy one. He was initially discovered by a DSWT Pilot during an anti-poaching patrol in Tsavo East National Park in March 2016. Upon rescue, it became evident that Lugard was in severe pain, with a swollen and broken leg. Further investigations revealed the shocking truth that Lugard had been shot in the knee and foot, resulting in extensive damage to his leg.
Despite his wounds, Lugard maintains a gentle nature. He understands his limitations and often stays behind while his companions venture deep into the forest. His caretakers ensure his safety and provide a warm and secure environment for him.
Although Lugard receives extensive care at the moment, his handlers remain hopeful for his future. They envision a time when he can roam freely in the wilderness, as the nursery aims to rehabilitate orphaned elephants and reintroduce them to their natural habitats.
One of Lugard’s caregivers shares that while he may possess a gentle demeanor, he also exhibits an indomitable will to lead a fulfilling and joyful life. Lugard serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength that can be found within even the most challenging circumstances.
